Soweto will be the voice of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
Roots World Summit Radio, founded by a group of youths from the township and based in Jabulani, won a licence on Wednesday to exclusively broadcast on the summit for 24 hours a day.
Station manager Nicholas Motloung said the station would be a "channel through which local people could communicate with the world".
'An example for youths to stop believing they can do nothing without financing' The station will broadcast in English and French and have some of its news bulletins read in Spanish to cater for some of the many languages represented at the summit.

Locals would be able able to speak to summit bigwigs through talkshows.
The station's sales manager Martin Mwale said that while most of the broadcasts would be dedicated to summit events, the station would also showcase South African music.
Roots World Summit Radio intends hosting a cultural exchange programme where guests from other countries will talk about their culture.
It is the third time that Roots will go on air for a specific project. The station was appointed to broadcast the launch of the Partnership Against Aids and the heritage month broadcasts in 1998.
However, Motloung said the station had not yet raised "even R100 000" of the R500 000 he said was necessary for it to function effectively.
But getting the licence symbolised triumph. "Financial resources don't mean much. If you have a vision, then you will achieve," he said. "We told ourselves that finances will not be a stumbling block for us."
Mwale added: "I think this should serve as an example for other youths to stop believing that without financing there is nothing they can do."
The station will broadcast on 92.7fm stereo from Monday.
