London - First came the sarong. Then the diamond earrings. Now David Beckham is inspiring British men to delve into the womanly world of nail varnish.
Two days after the England soccer captain was spotted wearing pink nail polish at a christening, high street stores on Tuesday reported a sudden increase in the number of men buying the product.
"We have seen a surge in men coming into the shop and asking for nail polish," a spokesperson for Woolworths said. "The staff were a bit confused at first until it was pointed out that Beckham had started a new craze."
The star has sparked a string of fashion trends - from the fun to the ridiculous - over the past couple of years. During last month's World Cup finals, thousands of British men sported blond-tipped mohican haircuts. Last summer, children across the country shaved strips out of their eyebrows and hair in a bid to imitate their hero.

Boy George prefers brighter colours The revelation two years ago that he wore the knickers of his Spice Girl wife Victoria was also greeted with glee by the media and his army of followers.
Such is Beckham's fashion status that high street cosmetics chain Boots has introduced a male manicure aptly named "The Beckham".
"The treatment includes nail analysis, soak, moisturising cuticle treatment and nail file, followed by a protein formula nail application," a spokesperson said.
She added: "There have been a lot more men coming into the store for manicures in the past few days."
Beckham is not the first male celebrity to sport nail polish. Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne and Goth shock-rocker Marilyn Manson have always daubed his nails black. Boy George prefers brighter colours. - Reuters
