Except for the columns supporting the portico of the Kat at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, Stoep Talk is South Africa's oldest column. My secretary is Threnody Higginbottom (we call her Miss Smith around the office) and on a good day we receive so many ideas from readers I can go home early and see what there is in the fridge
In between writing my columns in The Star I also write books - around 30 so far - mostly humour nowadays but I have written a lot of non-fiction too.
Annually I try my best to lead a team of four retired newspaper editors and a photographer (a retired businessman) - average age 71 - on bicycles to explore Darkest Europe to bring back to Africa tales of the strange natives there and their funny customs. Our first five adventures became a book, Blazing Saddles, most of which is true.
