It's strange the corners where discrimination against women still lurks, even in places where you would never think to look.

For example, you wouldn’t expect to find it at the natural and flavoured spring-water-bottling factory of aQuelle, especially given the company’s generous sponsorship of major swimming and mountain-biking competitions.

‘Mr X” wants to become an advocate. But he has a secret: Some years ago he abducted his young daughter and they spent five years wandering around Europe on false documents, with Interpol and the South African police looking for them.

Happily for all concerned the situation appears to have been resolved and the child is back with her mother.

This is a story about a baboon named Warren. It’s a sad story. All the humans he came into contact with let him down, except the people that the law persecuted. And now he’s dead.

Warren was found at Hammanskraal, with two illegally held ant bears, when Gauteng nature conservation officials accompanied a police officer to search the premises.

Every afternoon, when I take the dogs for a walk, we drive past a junior school. For many months part of the grounds has been a bright green contrast to the wintry khaki-grey of the neighbouring veld. But the green isn’t healthy. It’s where sewer drains have burst, leaking their contents on to the playground.

People associated with the school say they’ve complained numerous times, and that workers have come to the site. They leave their tools there permanently but only work occasional Sundays to coincide with overtime hours.

BROTHERLY back-stabbing has an ancient history. But it’s also right up to date. Just ask Port Elizabeth doctor, Bongani Nqini. 

Maybe he has a thing about banks, maybe he just likes ready cash, but last November, Dr Nqini had about R1 million in cash, with jewellery and other items, in two wall safes in his bedroom.
