SCHABIR Shaik wants his f***ing pardon, and he wants it now. He's not the only one to think (and speak) like that. We all want to be let off responsibility for the things we have done that get us into trouble further down the line. We want god or the president or the universe to pardon us. And we want them to deliver on that pardon right now so we can continue with life as usual.
Consider Reatile Mochebelele and Letlafuoa Molapo, who both tried to wriggle out of the consequences of taking bribes over the Katse Dam in Lesotho. It seemed the Maseru High Court was going to play ball, for it ruled that if they merely paid back some of their bribes, this would be punishment enough. The Appeal Court viewed things rather differently, saying the two had to accept responsibility for their deeds and spend time in jail.
