WHY is it that as gay people in the US, men and women, step confidently from the closet, those opposed to gay equality seek refuge in their own kind of closet? It's an intriguing question, asked this week by leading US legal commentator, Linda Greenhouse, as she reflected on current developments in her country.

The new kind of closet she has in mind is one in which the instruments of democracy are used to shield anti-gay prejudice from scrutiny and bigots enrol the help of the courts to hide their behaviour from the public, claiming privacy protection. Two examples illustrate her point.
