I have received an impassioned plea from Barbara Hutchison of Joburg asking me – nay, frantically begging me – to recall “any reasons why anybody should be happy about turning 60”.

While Barbara acknowledges that reaching 60 is better than the alternative, she is obviously seeking solace.

Fellow journalist Leon Marshall tells me of a crazed Piet-my-vrou (red-chested cuckoo) now squatting in the River Club area of Sandton. He writes: “The cuckoo’s call is normally such a pleasant sound when you hear it in October. You know spring has arrived.

“But this year the bird is making me look forward, just a bit, to the change of season. Don’t get me wrong. I normally love birds and bird song.”
