Glencore would cut a fifth of the full-time posts at its Rosh Pinah zinc and lead mine in Namibia, the commodities supplier said yesterday. A miners’ union is opposing the retrenchments. “The management of Rosh Pinah Zinc has announced changes that aim to address significant economic pressures. The changes affecting… 124 full-time employees are part of an ongoing review of operations,” the group said. The Mineworkers Union of Namibia had asked the labour court to order a halt to the reductions, general secretary Ebben Zarondo said. The company had cut 190 positions at the mine since May last year as it was not breaking even, Zarondo added. Rosh Pinah had 600 permanent staff and 138 contractors and temporary workers at the end of last year. The firm said it had approached the Namibian Chamber of Mines to help secure new jobs for affected workers. – Bloomberg
