Gold Fields (GFI) has reopened the West section of its Kloof Driefontein Complex‚ its largest source of gold production‚ after an underground fire broke out of 30 June resulting in five people dying from smoke inhalation.

The Ya Rona shaft remains closed and the underground fire is still burning‚ Gold Fields said. “The fire at the Ya Rona Shaft has not yet been extinguished and proto teams continue to attend the scene.” It said.

Both the East and West sections of the mine have been reopened.

KDC is one of three mining operations in SA and it is near Westonaria. The mine produced 1.1 million oz of gold in 2011‚ making it the single largest mining operation within Gold Fields. - I-Net Bridge
