Rustenburg - Expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema on Tuesday lashed out at President Jacob Zuma and said the commission of inquiry into the Marikana shootings was politically motivated.
“I do not trust Zuma. The police must investigate this, not some politically motivated commission,” Malema said.
Malema, a group of locals and some workers were behind closed doors at the Marikana police station opening murder charges against the police.
He told media gathered at the police station that the police could do the investigations better.
“This is the way it is supposed to be done. This is the normal process.”
“The person who established this commission is not an honest man. He established it to arrive at certain conclusions,” Malema said.
Last week, Lonmin rock drill operators embarked on protest action that saw 10 people, including two security guards and two police officers, killed.
The protests culminated in clashes with the police on Thursday, in which 34 miners were shot dead, more than 70 injured and 260
arrested.
The protests were believed to be linked to rivalry between the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union over recognition agreements at the mine. Workers also wanted higher pay. - Sapa
