Johannesburg - A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a bus driver who was reporting for work in Soweto on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.
A 27-year-old man was arrested in Meadowlands around 8am, Constable Sibusiso Chauke said.
Rea Vaya bus drivers gathered at 5am outside the depot in Meadowlands for a strike.
A 54-year-old driver on his way to report for duty was assaulted.
Police who were in the area rescued him.
The attackers fled the scene on foot and only one was arrested.
The man was taken to hospital.
Rea Vaya bus operator Litsamaiso confirmed the assault.
Litsamaiso manages the operations of the Rea Vaya's buses along with Piotrans.
Litsamaiso spokesman Babu Maharaj said Piotrans employees were on strike, but Litsamaiso workers could not work because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Both companies operated from the same depot.
Maharaj said no buses were running as the company was waiting for the union to report back on whether it would accept a draft agreement tabled on Sunday.
Rea Vaya drivers went on strike indefinitely on Monday, leaving commuters in Johannesburg stranded.
Drivers wanted labour brokers to be banned, their code of conduct to be reviewed, senior staff members to choose their shifts, and the union to be introduced during the induction of new workers. - Sapa
