Johannesburg - Metalworkers union Numsa is planning to serve a 48-hour strike notice on Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), general secretary Irvin Jim said on Thursday.

“It has not yet been served, but we are in the process,” he said.

“We basically, in the whole sector, have been demanding double digits, but for the lower spade workers there is a demand for R2500.”

Included in the National Union of Metalworkers' demands were housing, shift and transport allowances.

Jim said the union wanted the practice of strip-searching workers - when they ended a shift - to be stopped.

“We want the company to stop the practice of taking workers' clothes off when they leave work. They strip them naked,” he said.

The union also wanted a 40-hour week, and for workers to not work on public holidays.

Jim could not say when the strike notice would be served. - Sapa
