Johannesburg - Retail group Spar has increased sales by 14.1 percent from R24.5 billion to R28bn for the 18-week trading period to January, the company said yesterday.

Excluding the impact of the BWG Group, Spar’s brand owner in Ireland and southwest England, Spar’s sales in South Africa increased by 8.4 percent, with internally measured price inflation of 3.9 percent.

Spar’s Build It business showed strong sales growth of 14.6 percent, with large contributions by the performance of the brand in neighbouring countries.

The group’s liquor sales remained robust in South Africa, with sales growth exceeding 12.5 percent. The financial results for the six months to March 31 will be released on May 18.
