Johannesburg -

A strike by the labour union Amcu at Impala, Lonmin and Anglo American platinum enters its second day on Friday.

The strike would continue during a meeting between the Labour Department, the mining companies and Amcu at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration in Johannesburg, according to Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant's office.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union members at the three companies went on strike on Thursday.

They are pushing for an entry-level monthly salary of R12 500.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the platinum companies welcomed a government offering to mediate in their ongoing dispute with Amcu.

Amplats CEO Chris Griffith, Implats CEO Terence Goodlace and Lonmin CEO Ben Magara said a prolonged strike would probably further damage South Africa's reputation as an attractive business and investment destination.

On Tuesday, the companies said Amcu's wage demands were unaffordable and unrealistic. - Sapa
