Johannesburg - South Africa's gold producers said on Friday they had received a 48-hour strike notice from the National Union of Mineworkers and expected the strike to take effect from the night shift on Tuesday.

The NUM issued the notice on Friday, the Chamber of Mines said.

“The strike is expected to begin with effect from the night shift on Tuesday, 3 September 2013,” the chamber’s spokeswoman Charmane Russell said in a statement.

She said gold producers remained open to wage discussions to reach an acceptable agreement.

“The employers will continue to make plans in anticipation of strike action, to ensure the continuation of essential services, and to ensure the safety and security of employees and assets.” - Reuters and Sapa
