Johannesburg – Annual consumer price inflation was 6.8 percent in
December, quickening from the 6.6 percent seen in November.
In a publication released on
Wednesday, Statistics SA said the consumer price index increased by 0.4 percent
month-on-month in December 2016.
As contributors, Stats SA
cited housing and utilities, which now comprises a bigger percentage of the
basket.
Recreation and culture and restaurants
and hotels also increased weighting, while transport costs decreased, given
that the weighting declined.

The food and non-alcoholic
beverages index also increased.
In December the CPI for
goods increased by 7.8 percent year-on-year (up from 7.7 percent in November),
and the CPI for services increased by 5.9 percent year-on-year (up from 5.6 percent
in November), Stats SA said.
