The government had not budgeted enough money to deal with the expected number of new land claims, the Alliance for Rural Democracy (ARD) said yesterday. If land claims continued to be settled at the current rate, it would take 121 years to clear all claims, it warned. According to ARD, there was a backlog of 30 000 claims of the 80 000 lodged from 1994 to 1998. ARD urged the government to prioritise unresolved claims before taking on new ones.
