Mamphela Ramphele had resigned as Gold Fields’ chairwoman to “further her socio-economic and political activities”, the gold producer said yesterday.

Ramphele, a former anti-apartheid activist who is tipped to launch a political party soon, was appointed to the board in July 2010 and chaired it from November 2010.

“I am pleased that during my tenure at Gold Fields significant progress has been made in entrenching the sustainability of the company’s operations worldwide,” she said.

“I also believe that the unbundling of the Kloof Driefontein Complex and Beatrix mines into Sibanye Gold will provide the South African operations with the dedicated and focused management as well as full control over their cash flows to extend their life of mine in a sustainable manner to benefit investors, employees and communities.”

Cheryl Carolus, a Gold Fields non-executive director, would succeed Ramphele. The shares rose 0.87 percent to R92.04. – Dineo Faku
