Telkom’s cellphone arm, 8ta, would trial high-speed long-term evolution (LTE) technology from November 1 until the end of March next year, Telkom said yesterday. It invited customers within 8ta’s LTE coverage areas across Gauteng to apply to participate and test a 50 gigabyte data bundle using routers, cellphone data modems and SIM cards. Registrations will be done through a dedicated LTE page, on 8ta’s website, which will go live on Wednesday. Telkom said it had been testing the service internally for a year. Amith Maharaj, 8ta’s senior managing executive, said the demand for superior cellphone data services was increasing. “Our engineers have been testing the technology and have achieved peak speeds of up to 90 megabytes per second (Mbps) for downloads and up to 25Mbps for uploads using the appropriate end user device.” Telkom stock declined 0.11 percent to close at R17.80 yesterday. – Asha Speckman
