Wireless Business Solutions (WBS), a sister company to internet provider iBurst, lost its bid in the high court yesterday for the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) to return equipment it had seized in a raid on the company last year.

The provider of cellular network data for corporates and government agencies said in a statement it would pursue “a more amicable and lasting solution” and it would lodge an appeal as a last resort.

A year ago the South Gauteng High Court had ordered Icasa to return the equipment and restrained the industry regulator from further interfering with the company.

Icasa had raided WBS claiming that it owed millions of rands in unpaid fees and of operating illegal radio links over several years.

The South Gauteng High Court has dismissed the application for the equipment to be returned but kept the order of April 5 last year prohibiting regulatory interference to allow WBS to institute an appeal. – Asha Speckman
