Johannesburg - Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has agreed to investigate Eskom's R30 million pension payout to its former CEO Brian Molefe.

The DA had initially asked the Public Protector to investigate the payment labeling it as "golden handshake" because Molefe had only served 18 months as CEO before his sudden resignation in November last year.

The party says Molefe does not deserve the money especially since he had resigned out of his own will.

He resigned after links between him and the Gupta family emerged following the release of the Public Protector's State of Capture report.

That report had showed that Molefe was in constant contact with the Gupta family numerous times early last year, while Eskom was due to sign a deal with one of the family's companies.

The Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown had rejected the board's proposal of a R30 million pension payout and even welcomed Molefe's short return to Eskom in May as a better solution.

Molefe is currently in legal battle with Eskom to set aside his removal after he was dismissed in early June following recommendations from Brown and the ANC National Executive Committee.

Opposition parties had taken taken to court to challenge his return to Eskom in May.
