Davos, Switzerland - The United states could reopen its Tehran embassy, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani indicated ahead of his speech at the World Economic Forum on Thursday.
Rowhani made his comments in an interview with Swiss public broadcaster RTS, four days after Iran started scaling back its nuclear activities and the US and the European Union suspended sanctions as part of an agreement to ease concerns about alleged Iranian nuclear weapons projects.
“The reopening of an American embassy in Tehran is not impossible,” Rowhani said on the sidelines of the meeting of global political and business leaders in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.
The US embassy in Tehran has been closed for more than 30 years since the Islamic revolution in Iran.
The president has made clear that his goal in Davos is to woo Western investors and to meet chief executives of global oil and gas companies.
Western sanctions are currently only suspended, and the ban on Iranian oil exports remains in force.
However, Iran and six world powers are aiming to conclude a final agreement in the next six months under which sanctions would be scrapped for good, in return for additional nuclear concessions.
Along with Rowhani, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also set to give a keynote speech later Thursday. - Sapa-dpa
