Mediamax Network, a media firm associated with President Uhuru Kenyatta, is offering its newspaper for free as it seeks to become Kenya’s biggest-selling daily. The People Daily, which previously cost 60 shillings (R7.15), would be distributed free nationwide from yesterday, chief executive Ian Fernandes said. Content would target younger, better-educated and wealthier readers to draw advertisers, he said. A firm owned by Kenyatta’s family held a stake in Mediamax, he said. Aly-Khan Satchu of Rich Management said: “The owners have deep pockets and probably the goal is to give the president’s allies a platform to reach the masses. It remains to be seen if the model will turn a profit.” – Bloomberg
