A teen from Hull in the US state of Georgia is under arrest and accused of spending about $25 000 (R265 000) that a bank accidentally deposited into his account, according to police.

The Madison County sheriff’s department said 18-year-old Steven Fields had turned himself in on Friday. He faced a charge of theft. The department said a teller at a bank in Hull had inadvertently deposited a cheque for $31 000 into the wrong account. Authorities said the money had been spent on purchases at a car dealership, stores and a fast-food restaurant.

Authorities said there had been an effort to come to an agreement between Fields and the bank but the teenager had said he could not repay the money. A home phone number for Fields could not be located, and it was not immediately clear whether the teenager had an attorney. – Sapa-AP
