All eyes on Fed decision

Johannesburg - This week, investors’ attention will be on the meeting of the US Federal Reserve today and tomorrow. The US interest decision will be released tomorrow.

Most countries will also release their balance of trade, inflation rate, manufacturing and industrial production, retail sales and housing figures. South Africa’s latest retail sales and production data will be announced.

Domestically

Today: Statistics SA (Stats SA) will publish the January data on mining, gold mining and manufacturing production.

Tomorrow: The Bureau for Economic Research (BER) will announce the RMB/BER business confidence Index for Q1 2017. Stats SA will announce the latest retail sales figures for January.

Globally

Today: China: Industrial production - January-February and Retail sales - January-February; Australia: Business confidence index - February; Germany: Inflation rate - February and Economic sentiment index - March; EU: Industrial production - January; Russia: Balance of trade - January; US: PPI - February and Fed Labour market conditions index - February.

Tomorrow: Australia: New motor vehicle sales - February; Japan: Industrial production - January; France: Inflation Rate: February; UK and the EU: Unemployment rate - January; US: Inflation rate - February, Empire state manufacturing index - March, Retail sales - February, Business inventories - January, Housing market index - January and crude oil stock - 10 March: US: Fed Interest rate decision and press conference.

Thursday, March 16: Australia: Employment change - February; Japan: Bank of Japan interest rate decision; EU: Inflation rate - February; UK: Interest rate decision; US: Initial and continuing jobless claims - February 25 and natural gas stocks - March 3, building permits and housing starts - February; US: Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index - March; Russia: Industrial production - February.

Friday, March 17: EU: Balance of trade - January; Canada: Manufacturing sales - January; US: Industrial and Manufacturing production - February; US: Michigan consumer confidence index - March.
