Dying for a dose of spooky shenanigans and some Nazis to strafe? Well, the moon is in the correct alignment for a return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein has had numerous incarnations over the years since it burst on to the Apple II in 1981, creating a new genre of stealth and shooting games.

This year's take on the game is as graphically slick and gruesomely gory as you'd expect, but unlike previous Wolfenstein releases, this gives the supernatural a lot more scope with the addition of the Veil, an alternative reality where players gain new superhuman powers to do battle with Hitler's haunted henchmen.

With three multiplayer modes and eight maps, there's more cooperative play on offer than ever before.

Flipnote studio

DSi

With many gamers failing to see the point in upgrading to the DSi, Nintendo needs to up the ante with its DSiWare.

If Flipnote Studio is anything to go by, though, the Japanese giant is on the right track.

This free piece of software turns the DSi into an on-the-go animation device - using the concept of flip-book animation - that is easy to grasp but deep enough to result in hours of play creating mini masterpieces with.

Adding sound effects and posting your films on to the web is a breeze.

Flipping great.

Summer athletics 2009

PC, WII, Xbox

Running, jumping, firing arrows into targets, Summer Athletics 2009 ostensibly has plenty to keep the indoor sportsman happy.

But despite a solid roster of activities - 28 events in all - this title picks a rocky path between casual fun and serious sports sim, failing to convince at either discipline.

A major flaw is the control system, particularly when using the Wii-mote, which asks little more of players other than to bash the hell out of their buttons, something that may having been charming when Track and Field was cutting edge, but doesn't cut the mustard now. - Rebecca Armstrong, The Independent
