Johannesburg - A decade ago, Kenya's banking industry lodged

a formal petition for regulators to prevent Safaricom from launching M-Pesa.

That failed lobbying effort led to M-Pesa becoming what

is widely considered Africa's biggest mobile money success story to date.

It's hard to believe that it's taken ten years for Kenyan

banks to roll out a concerted push-back effort against the now-ubiquitous

M-Pesa remittance service.

Now, the Central Bank of Kenya has granted twelve

banks permission to run an industry-based mobile cash transfer platform.
