London - Staff unable to go to meetings could soon send virtual “body doubles” via a three-dimensional video service being developed by Skype.

Mark Gillett, corporate vice-president of the communications company, said: “We have it in the lab, we know how to make it work.”

The next step for the 3D system, he said, was to look at the “ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market”.

It is assumed the images would be shown on a 3D TV or similar screen.

Skype, owned by Microsoft and ten years old this week, allows audio and video calls between users via devices such as computers and smartphones. Since its launch, it has clocked up more than 1.4 trillion minutes of calls. - Daily Mail
