Montreal - Three teenagers were arrested in the Canadian province of Quebec and risk two years of jail time for alleged Facebook remarks about killing staff and students at their school, police said on Thursday.
Jean-Francois Parent, secretary general of the education commission overseeing the school in question, said “death threats” were made and that the youths - two boys aged 14 and 15 and a 16-year-old girl - “had a plan.”
No weapons were found during a search of their lockers, but the students could face up to two years in a youth detention centre if found guilty of “conspiracy to commit murder.”
The head of the school said he alerted police in light of recent school shootings across the border in the United States. On December 14, a gunman massacred 20 first graders and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, sparking a heated debate about gun control. - Sapa-AFP
