London - An iPad on the kitchen counter has become an increasingly common sight as we look up our recipes online rather than in cookery books. However, there’s always a risk of spilling bolognese on the screen or getting flour in the socket.

Now, design student and budding inventor Siobhan Andrews has come up with an ingenious new device: a glass chopping board with a touch-screen tablet embedded in it. The reinforced glass will withstand the action of knives and hot spilled liquids.

Siobhan’s chopping tablet — the winning design in a competition run by electrical goods manufacturer Sharp — also functions as a set of scales, and favourite recipes can be saved and new ones downloded as the tablet can be connected to the internet using wi-fi.
