London - A new watch-like gadget claims to be able to warn the wearer when they are about to become sunburned.
The £30 (about R500) device was created to help people do without suncream, which protects the skin from harmful effects of the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays, but also stops it absorbing the UVB light used by the body to make vitamin D which manages calcium levels and maintains healthy bones.
The user inputs their estimated skin sensitivity on a scale of 1 to 11. LED lights on the watch illuminate as UV exposure increases. When it is time to get out of the sun, they flash.
Barbara Boucher, who researches vitamin D at Queen Mary University of London, said the device could be useful provided the calibration is reasonably accurate. But she added: “Worn on the wrist, it only tells you about sunlight on that wrist.” - Daily Mail
