Asset grabs on agenda of ANCYL

The ANC Youth League’s position on the nationalisation of mines and expropriation of land without compensation drew sharp criticism ahead of the organisation’s elective conference, which began at Gallagher Estate in Midrand yesterday.

The two issues are set to be the key discussion points at this week’s conference.

John Purchase, the chief executive of the Agricultural Business Chamber, said: “All land, including commercial and industrial land, are security for bank finance. Without land there would be no security to finance crops and there will be no security to get financing. Farmers would not be able to produce on the same level that they are producing now.”

Johann Willemse, a professor of agricultural economics at the University of the Free State, said if the league’s agenda was implemented, the country would turn into a socialist state.

“Where do we draw the line? Would one still owe the bank if land has been expropriated without compensation. It doesn’t make any sense. There is no economic basis for that kind of policy, even China moved away from the government-owned land system because it doesn’t work,” he added.

In a discussion document titled Programme of Action for Economic Freedom in Our Lifetime, the youth league calls for the expropriation of land without compensation, in an effort to speed up land reform.

The document will be on the agenda at the elective conference which runs until June 20. - Business Report

One hopes that the ANC realises the unsettling effect talk of nationalisation has on those citizens who have something to lose through ationalisation. Judging by the secrecy surrounding the emigration statistics they do. People who feel there is something in this talk are certainly not going to make long-term investments in this country and are almost certainly making plans to leave it before too long.

I agree with Malema all the way as a white South African, the property that I have been paying all these year is his. So I want my money back and also a management fee of R60 000 000. What is fair is fair. VIVA MALEMA!

There is documented and undocumented proof of ownership of land. All land was owned by a tribe under the custody of a Chief. The reason we have chiefs today is because chieftainship has never been in place since pre-colonial times. Makhanda kaNxele aka Makana was one of the first Africans to attempt a cultural synthesis of African and European beliefs, but his fame rests on his ability to forge an alliance between different Xhosa polities, on military exploits, and on his struggle to preserve Xhosa independence in the face of British imperial interference. Makhanda is reputed to have prophesied about the whites: "There they come! They have crossed the Qagqiwa [Zwartkops River] and they have crossed the Nqweke [Sundays River]. Only one river more, the Nxuba [Fish], and then they will be in our land. What will become of you then?" As it turned out, we were colonised and subsequently subjected to crimes against humanity by apartheid

Please show us a pre-settler map of the land you owned and the papers dated before 1820 as proof of ownership of the land you claim was taken from you. Merely claiming it's your land is simply not good enough. If that was the case then anyone can claim ownership to any land they wish. Just merely squatting on a piece of land at a certain time does not mean you owned it.

Dear Julius, You and the ANC, same thing, have "grabbed" municipalities and observe where they are now. Service delivery is not in your vocabulary. Can you imagine what will happen to farms, factories, mines and other commercial activities once you and your illiterate mamparas nationalise everything. Jobs will disappear together with productivity and you will be faced with a revolution from those very blind people that now support your insane rhetoric. Forget it Julius it will not work and South Africa will be no more.

Considering blacks never owned any land even before the colonialist arived, I'd like to know what land this idiot Malema feels he is entitled to grab. The concept of land ownership never existed before the colonialist arrived so what land is he talking about. Is it the 50km radius that his tribe may have been squatting on at the time of the settler's arrival? The borders of South Africa were defined by the settler so one wonders why the ANC isn't disputing the validity of these borders - pretty much the old mindset of scavenging off as much of what the settler created for these morons. Please show us your land ownership papers and a map of the land you owned before the settler got here. The whole thing about having taken land from blacks in Africa is a farce. There was no constitution at the time of the settlers arrival and therefore no land ownership. The land belongs to the parties that claimed it first i.e. the settler.

zuma must muzzle his dog malema, keep it on a tight leash. Investors are already taking their money out of the country and this will cause the fall of South Africa. It is already half way down the abyss.....

"Economic freedom in our life time" for who? The ANCYL should rather focus on ideas that empower the youth (such as education) rather than plotting schemes to steal land and businesses to line their own pockets. This all comes down to the sense of entitlement that 80% of todays youth have. Why not rather educate the youth (adequately) so that they may one day be able to apply for a loan (on the back of their qualifications) to purchase land and to farm it or mine it to its full extent in a sustainable manner? Or am I expecting too much from an African state who condones Mugabes actions.

ANC wants skilled labourers from other countries to immigrate to SA and skilled labourers from SA to emigrate to other countries. What a master plan!

The only reason for land grabs is like in other countries like Zimbabwe that have tried this, is to enrich an elite. The poor never benefitted and those that did ended up poorer as did the country as any country needs profitable, well run commercial farms to be able to produce the food necessary to feed the growing population. Our country has too large a population to be able to survive with subsistence farming which is all the poor would be able to achieve.
