The Black Management Forum (BMF) has reacted with 'utter shock and disappointment' to the open letter that Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel sent to government spokesman Jimmy Manyi.
In the letter Manuel labelled Manyi, who is also the president of the BMF, a “racist”.
“The BMF finds it unbecoming of a cabinet minister, who holds such a respectable position, to unleash a vitriolic tirade and personal attack on Manyi,” said BMF deputy president, Tembakazi Mnyaka, said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The BMF will, however, not be detracted by this attack now and this matter will receive the BMF's appropriate attention and response at the right time,” Mnyaka added.
In the open letter, which was published in the Mercury newspaper, Manuel hit out at Manyi over his comments on coloured people.
“I want to draw your attention to the fact that your statements about 'an over-concentration of coloureds' are against the letter and spirit of the South African constitution, as well as being against the values espoused by the Black Management Forum since its inception,” Manuel wrote in the letter.
“I want to put it to you that these statements would make you a racist in the mould of Hendrik Verwoed, former SA prime minister, dubbed the “architect of apartheid”.
Manyi, then the director-general of labour, said in a show broadcast on KykNet's Robinson Regstreeks in March 2010 that there was an “over supply” of coloureds in the Western Cape.
The ANC distanced itself from Manyi's remarks, saying they were “disturbing” and “unacceptable”.
Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) deputy chief executive officer Vusi Mona had since apologised for the remarks on Manyi's behalf.
Manuel wrote that the fact that Mona had issued an apology for Manyi's remarks showed “...that you 1/8Manyi 3/8 lack the moral conviction to publicly apologise says so much about your acute lack of judgement”.
“Mr Manyi, you may be black, or perhaps you aren't, because you do not accept that label and would prefer to be 'only a Xhosa', whatever the label you choose, I want to put it to you that your behaviour is the worst-order racist.”
Manuel said that because of Manyi's comments government was being asked to explain what “was in the mind” of drafters of the amendments to the Employment Equity Bill.
“Now, in the light of the utterances you have made at a time when you were the DG of the department of labour, and given the fact that the amendments to the Employment Equity Act were drafted during your tenure, I have a sense that your racism has infiltrated the highest echelons of the government.”
Manuel pointed out to Manyi that the “coloureds” were the sons and daughters of those who had fought anti-colonial battles and made huge sacrifices in the struggle against apartheid.
“By the way, what did you do in the war, Jimmy?” he asked.
Manuel ended off the letter with: “I know now who Nelson Mandela was talking about when he said from the dock that he had fought against white domination and that he had fought against black domination. Jimmy, he was talking about fighting against people like you.” - Sapa and Justin Brown

Wow! Mr Manyi's comments are indeed interesting. an over-supply of coloureds on cape town, a concentration of indians in Durban...hmm the solution, some ministers think, is Why not re-enact forced removal under the guise of employment equity? I have all the repsect for trevor manual and all the other ministers and black leaders in our country who respect the constitution. How long will the race card and affirmative action be played? Why don't the ministers and everyone else sitting pretty on mounds of tax-payers cash invest it in excellent education and development of resources for the poor black communities? One thing is for certain, too much power not coupled with a discerning moral code and intellect corrupts all who have it- whether white, black or brown, people with power do whatever they can to consolidate their power base, without effecting any real change for the masses who look up to them-waiting for change.

@Zuki. Please, you are not talking to the uneducated masses. Manyi is not trying to uplift anybody else but Black AFricans and the ANC. Do yourself a favour and learn the true history of the Struggle, and then you will realise why people are so angry with these new mouth pieces in the ANC. This is not what we struggled for. For some of you who say that Blacks were the only ones who suffered under Apartheid, Steve Biko reminds us that you cannot be half pregnant. Furthermore the ancestors of the Coloured people of this country were the only people who experienced slavery in this country. Get to know your country's people before you talk like an expert on these matters.

In the movement of the last decade it has become increasingly evident that the colour black is not a generic title that all non-white people fit into. The reason for the old rule of course comes from fear of the unknown. One significantr differencehere is that i am not so sure that the unknown is the real problem here. Is it not perhaps that the black on black racist inclinations stem from the known? Knowing that there are black people who are willing to work harder and with far greater integrity than the ones with amazing utterances?

Hi All Yes this is an emotive issue ...hence Trevors reaction !! But it is very , very important to remember that when you read any speach , book or statement by someone , - you HAVE to check the persons CREDIBILITY , CHARACTER AND IF THE PERSON HAS WALKED THE TALK !! TREVOR MANUAL has character , as he has shown this to all fellow South Africans ....so if he " reacts " then it is time for us who witness this , to TAKE NOTE This is a respected man by his peers locally and internationally so what is my point ...?? Trevor Manual is seeing a movement within government that is harmful to " colourds and indians ". he is seeing that certain previously disadvantaged people are being sidelined and is reacting to this he is very brave and indicated that he is willing to make more sacrifices.... people , lets back him , as he is sticking his own neck out in public debate to fight for what is ours , equality and justice and a free and fair South Africa dont let him stand alone ....make your voice herd in support for him .

The Africa for Africans slogan has come to rear the inner demon of Nationalism reversed, once White now Black (only how Black does one have to be in order to feed one's Capitalists' ambitions [rich how Malema claims socialism] in the economic frenzy of BEE). What people all need to realise is that we ALL are blood of the Khoi (DNA proof shows such) and that it's the Coloureds with the highest DNA for Khoi (fact, check out such reports online). And that both Black and White people have part DNA of the "settlers" (from both sides) and the true story of South Africa not being a clear case is about to BLOW internationally to every media source globally, and how the ANC has reversed racism, instead of being the new light of freedom for South Africans. Whites who have never been to townships, haven't a clue about the lives of their fellow countrymen, rural uneducated Black families taught that White people eat babies, the ignored Coloureds and Indians and just the whole freaking mess. What we're dealing with is a very threat to the very exiostence of multi-cultural societies around the globe, depenmding on South Africa's Rainbow Nation to show the wolrd where it's at. The same rich preachers of Africa for Africans (therefore depends on how dark your skin is) want Europe and the US for Africans too as thousands arrive to Europe from Africa each week illegally. Globalists are gonna want this shut up, but they'll soon be dealing with the nature of Black Nationalist Nazism themselves

When I listen to him on TV he is not out of order. He is advising though in a very authoritative tone, that when Coloureds are only in the WC they deprive themselves opportunities in other provinces where they are so needed for EE balance. The sentence structure is the problem leading to misconstruing his message which is intended to mean exactly . There is literally nothing closer to racism in it. Trevor should have sought to understand the intended meaning of Manyi 's statement - certainly not in public media. People should refrain from these childlike embarassing mannerisms. Even if Manyi was wrong, the public does not enjoy negative reading - nwe need positive constructive statements.

reading the articles around the MnyiManuel case i've realised that this is not the only problem of that kind. In fact, there are also too many Zulus in Kwa Zulu-Natal, too many Venda in Limpopo, too many san in the Kalahari, too many Chinese in China, too many fish in the water, too many ... A possible solution to the unequal distribution of people is an attempt like China's Culture Revolution. It kicked the economic development of the counntry successfully back by at least a decade.

The BMF elected a chairman who is either a racist or suffers from foot in mouth disease, so don't be shocked if he is attacked for blabbing like an idiot. If you as a BMF want to be taken serious by anybody, get rid of him.

Compatriots, this is an emotive issue and people are angry, rightly so...but please let us not go all the way to make unfounded issues around it! It obviously plays into the hands of those who've always been suspicious, and you read what they say now.." its the ANC, or its how black people think of us as coloureds" - that is NOT true, Jimmy Manyi does not represent the ANC, does not represent or even speak on behalf of black Africans in particular, as the concept of blacks in SA includes Coloureds to start with! Even Minister Trevor Manuel has reacted strongly, after the outcry instead of letting it subside, now he's whipping up emotions even further! It is also curious as to how this now comes up when it was made in March 2010 and before the current job he is doing (which does not make it any less of an offence!)..Manyi must just apologise and say that he said this in another context not realised that it would offend so much and promise never to say stupid things before he has thought out carefully, esp n ow that he is the Govt spin-doctor!

Jo jo jo. And I'm only gone for 2 years and see what you guys get up. I need to come beack home to South Africa. PS: Jokes aside, we are all just South Africans. Some with less of an ego and others with an enormous amount of it and on our way up we will step on every single person that deemed to be in our way. Humility in South Africa is not easy to come by. The majority of us suffered long and hard and we still have a long road ahead of us. There will be more Jimmy's in the future and there will always be afrikaners that will exploit our people that are not white, and there will other South Africans with different shades that will do the same as their former masters and there will always be the English ladies in Constantia that will underpay their black and coloured maids because they are deemed to be inferior as human beings thus it is ok to discriminate against them and the Moslem ladies in Rylands exploiting the maids from the countryside at such a rate it makes all other things seem pale in comparison. It will always be there, but we have the means to fight these old and 'new' forms of oppression. It is not in the hands of the politicians. It is in our hands: Common South Africans!

Too late Trevor, anc's lost most of the coloured votes. Why such a long wait to respond. I would like to hear what the coloured anc committee members views are on this?

It's election time and they are now positioning themselves to get votes...this is a great way of getting the coloureds to think that the ANC is not so bad after all, with the likes of Trevor Manuel up at the top. Watch out for political positioning in these times!

When was this statement made by Jimmy, Mr Manual is a dissiplined member of the same party Jimmy belongs and the only reasom Trevor is getting all excited is its elections and its all about the Coloured Vote in the Western Cape. If the ANC is such a Non Racial Party why havn't they dissiplined him, Trevor is member of the same party that Jimmy and many racist, corrupt and oppotunists belong to.Trying to fool the Coloureds pretending that they have their interest at heart, its elections dont be so gullible. Its all about what is at stake. The Politicians pretending to be ANC Members has done worst and as long as Trevor benefits he just conveniently remain silent.
