Internal auditors need to take on a sharper risk focus, including whether a Greek scenario could ever arise in SA, said Claudelle von Eck, CEO of the Institute of Internal Auditors on Tuesday.
She said it was not right to just to blame leadership, as accountability also lay with those investigating the risks.
“When the watchdog sleeps, the crook can get in,” she said. This meant broadening horizons to include issues like analysing global trends, like the debt crisis.
It was important when auditing government departments to determine whether appropriate provision was being made for new risk factors.
Another new risk factor to be considered was the over-consumption of the world's finite natural resources and global food security, including whether SA was producing enough food to feed SA's people in ten years' time.
“It is leadership's responsibility, yes. But let's ask ourselves whether we could have done more,” she concluded. - I-Net Bridge
