Iran: SA will have to pick sides

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad walks in parliament in Tehran, November 1, 2011.

It probably doesn’t matter much that South Africa has, during its stints on the UN Security Council, backed all sorts of dodgy dictators such as the late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi or Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe.

South Africa may have looked spineless when it supported giving Gaddafi’s government a seat on the UN human rights council or saw nothing wrong with allowing Mugabe to attend a UN food security summit in Italy after turning his country’s key economic activity – agriculture – into a wasteland.

It did not mean that South Africa would be punished by the world community, or indeed, only by parts of it. But the decision by the EU to place an embargo on new oil contracts leaves South Africa with a conundrum. It is not so easy to defy the US – which has already placed an embargo on Iran – and Europe this time.

They represent together by far the biggest destinations for our products. The US is also threatening sanctions against financial institutions dealing with Iran’s central bank to purchase oil.

It looks set to become a big issue because Shell, BP, Sasol, Engen and Chevron import oil from Iran. On top of it the SA Petroleum Industry Association notes that Iran is our biggest supplier.

In addition Sasol and MTN have significant interests in Iran.

While Sasol is engaged in “preliminary talks for a possible divestiture” of its share in the Arya polymer plant, MTN does not look likely to review its 49 percent share in the Iranian telecommunications operator, Irancell.

Energy Department director-general Nelisiwe Magubane says it would cost about R300 million just to modify the refining facilities at South Africa’s private oil refineries if South Africa were to wean itself of the Iranian crude oil “diet”.

One suspects South Africa’s knee-jerk response would be to side with the Iranian government. Our propping up of Mugabe and prevarication over the no-fly zone in Libya are signals that our diplomatic heart lies with rulers who have backed our ruling party’s liberation struggle virtually at any cost to our so-called commitment to human rights.

It blinds us to any faults they may have as rulers. According to a Department of International Relations and Co-operation statement, the revolutionary Iranian government quickly severed diplomatic ties – which had been strong under the Shah – with South Africa.

The Islamic rulers backed the ANC’s “struggle” between 1979 and 1994 and reinstated diplomatic ties after 1994.

Any arguments that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lost the 2009 election – much like Mugabe did in 2008 – will most likely fall on deaf ears.

During former president Nelson Mandela’s term South Africa offered Iran nuclear enrichment expertise, believing the Islamic country would not make nuclear weapons as the US believes.

South Africa still believes that Iran’s intentions are peaceful despite threats to bomb nuclear-armed Israel – a country which may deserve opprobrium for its policies towards Palestine but doesn’t deserve to be to the target of endless ANC venom.

The Iranian crisis has all the ingredients of sparking a world war. It certainly will mean that South Africa will be sucked into the international economic battles in the medium term.

South Africa may just have to work out who is the piper who plays – and indeed pays – the most powerful tune.

Can anyone explain to me the significance of the middle-east relations and the world. Why is it that all oil rich countries in the middle-east are a target of the west? What is the West obsession with the middle-east? Why is Israel allowed nuclear ammunitions and the other countries are perceived to be a threat to peace? Could there be underlying motives that are not too obvious to the ordinary?

South Africa should follow India's example and continue trade with Iran. Why should we put ourselves in hardship because declining empires like the US and EU want to advance their interest, particularly at our expense. A massive hike in the fuel price is due for this Wednesday, simply because America and its proxy have a notion that Iran is busy producing nuclear weapons. We know for a fact that the Israel has nuclear weapons but no one is batting about that rogue state.Besides, the only country that caused mass destruction through an atomic bomb had been America. They are the last to speak.

@Mark, "The people live in poverty so the state can build a nuclear bomb and pay for car bombs in Bagdad (sic)" - so whats the diff between Iran and USA? If you watch the news (and not Days of our Lives)and observe the "Occupy Wall Street" protests you'll realise that many Americans are really poor, while their government is building and "paying" for bombs in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. But as you can see Mark is well read, and once he's made up his bigoted mind then there is no changing it.

Iran is a terrorist nation supplying weapons to any nut case with screwed up vision . They have sponsored car bombers, suicide bombers, fanatic priests. They throw rocks at woman but the man often escapes punishment. The people live in poverty so the state can build a nuclear bomb and pay for car bombs in Bagdad . The South African goverment has lost the plot. So what if MTN loses billions, its blood money. If the goverment of Iran is overthrown because of international pressure then we can buy oil from them again

Iran are not out for war...how can you say that, they are a bunch of religious fanatics, despotic like the worse that exists today, a la Mugabe, Kim Jong etc and you say they're not out for war? Their gov lost the elections and rigged the result and held on to power, why would they not strike Israel, if they had a nuclear weapon? For the sake of world stability take that government out, please!!

Why is it that writers like Peter Fabricus and Donwald Pressly always seem to view what the US and Europe says via their officials as being gospel. They just lap up the news from officials not once thinking that hey, these guys lied to us about WMD's before, maybe our government is correct in not supporting them. They then always find issue with our foreign policy. Guys, perhaps u should open up to other sources of info besides US, European and Isreali officials, CNN, Sky News, BBC etc. That way u will realize how much hogwash they talk and how u peddle it to us.

If Iran obtains nuclear weapon technology then it will be a threat to Israel who will strike fast. As it did to Iraq in the 1980s. Iran cannot be trusted not to share its nuclear secrets to Al Quieda and North Korea. It is bad enough that an unreliable ountry like Pakistan has nuclear weapons let alone Iran.

I'd rather be ruled by america than a theocratic muslim state like iran, any day. "Bloodsuckers" below - how are the chinese not doing exactly the same thing? Start learning mandarin and get ready to sell them your children for sweatshops. The day africa will have any dignity is the day it stops begging for handouts, gets off its arse, and fixes its own problems by creating its own work and employment, instead of sponging off a tiny pool of money that's emigrating fast.
