Limpopo faces a potential shortfall of R2 billion at the end of the financial year, the ministry of finance said on Thursday.

“Why has this situation come about in Limpopo? The province has large, accumulated unauthorised expenditure which has grown from R1.5bn in 2009 to R2.7bn 2011,” the ministry said in a statement.

The statement was released during a news briefing giving an update after the province was placed under administration in December.

The Cabinet put the province under administration after it emerged that Limpopo was bankrupt and could not pay civil servants, such as teachers and nurses.

In the department of health, the team found that:

- the province owed suppliers R138 million, but only half these payments, R67m, could be verified and approved for payment by December 23;

- R427m in assets had no supporting documents;

- there was R400m in irregular expenditure of goods and services, mostly medical equipment.

Education Minister Angie Motshekga said that in the province's education department there was no supply chain management, with the department not ordering pupil support material on time.

It accumulated unauthorised expenditure of R2.2bn and there was a R190m accrual of “stale debt” - money owed.

At least 200 “ghost” teachers were paid and there were 2400 excess teachers in the province.

Certain schools had not got the money they needed in 2011 for basics such as electricity and photocopying. - Sapa

Well done Limpopo, R2billion is 110th of all that disappeared last year. Very impressive, the Zuma clan thanks you for your hard work! Now lets find out who was the main culprit so they can be promoted to stay at home and earn [alleged] criminal status while “suspended”.

This is exactly what you get from the ANC cadre's. Corruption and gross mismanagement goes along with the severe lack of education. ANC needs to be removed!

Everyone is pointing Malema and Mathale with poor fingers but forget who the real culprits are!! The HOD's, the Mayors within municipalities, the Municipal Managers, The CFO's of those departments, why are those pp allowing unauthorized transactions to go through? why does their payment systems allow unathorized claims to go through? This might take the whole day and still wont be any solution cos even the people on the ground are the ones taking our government to the ground. You cant bid for a construction project while your company is dealing with catering, how do you expect to win that tender? Yes kick-back.... so before pointing Malema and Mathale please take a look in the mirror cos you are still going to put them in office again, so why the hoohaa?

Can't understand what people are complaining about. If they cared, then why did they vote ANC. People in Limpopo wanted the ANC in and voted them in, so it's exactly what the people want!

@Sinies, Why do you have to classify 'Malema's backers' as indian rather than just backers? People like you are the ones who draw up divisions, no doubt you are White! You complain when Malema classifies all whites as rascist (which I am sure not all are), yet people like you like to sow seeds of division. Get a life! Malema's backers are [allegedly] corrupt individuals, white, black, indian or coloured, there are many. Stop seeing colour wherever you look and try to identify yourself as a South African before you see yourself as White.
