New South African bank notes will bear the image of former president Nelson Mandela, President Jacob Zuma announced in Pretoria on Saturday.

The notes would make South Africans remember their achievements, Zuma told reporters at a function also attended by SA Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Saturday marks the 22nd anniversary of Mandela's release from prison.

Marcus said officials consulted widely on the notes, speaking to a wide range of people including Mandela's former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Zuma said the notes were still being produced.

Earlier on Saturday, German international news agency DPA reported lack of details about the nature of the announcement briefly spooked markets.

The rand tumbled about 2.5 per cent versus the dollar.

"Traders worried that the central bank of Africa's largest economy was about to make a drastic policy or personnel change while markets were closed," DPA said.

However, the Mail and Guardian cited sources as suggesting the announcement would likely be of a celebratory nature and possibly related to Mandela.

Following reassuring remarks from bank officials, who indicated that the news would not be about interest rates or resignations, the rand made a quick rebound. -Sapa

I have wondering when Papa Madiba will surface on the R200 note. I mean, is almost too late. I hope his face will not be downgraded to R100 or below. If there is an actual 1 world currency, they face that needed to be there is Papa Madiba among other few human beings.

Money is money. I respect Mandela. But as for the rest of these upstart pompous self important unelected smelly politicians of South Africa of ALL political parties, i detest the lot. Non were elected by the poople and were given their avaricious positions in a jobs for pals frenzy. They do nothing but talk, talk, talk and feed themselves. At the state of the nation address as seen on television they are all seemingly fat. They flaunted their ill gotten wealth and then went off to yet another celebratory dinner costing R10 million to we taxpayers. I cannot stand any of them i'm afraid.

Its fine. But i hate to see Zuma whom i cannot respect, being the one to act as if he is the reason that such an event is taking place. I suppose he reasons that one day hus picture will be on a note. It is all political aand another move by the ANC that it alone liberated South Africa from apartheid and no other person or organisation or person did anything substantial. The ANC did indeed make a contribution but it was negotiation and common sense that won the day. ZANUPF and the evil Mugabe in Zimbabwe for years rammed its liberation claims down the throats of the Zimbabwean people and now it and Mugabe are hated by those people.

Wonderful news. How proud I will be having notes in my wallet with the icon Madiba's image on it. My British partner remarked how they have the Queens images on their notes and how very proud is of that. Now we can both be proud and out too!

Great. I think we should change our currency to Madiba then it would improve in market.

This Cult of Mandela is no good. Next thing you know we'll hear about a Mandela Mausoleum like Lenin's.

WOW, that's great news. Personally, I think its about a decade late but none-the-less, it is a good gesture to celebrate Madiba's release from prison 22 years ago. The other conern I have is the way it was launched. Our currency and markets took a slight knock because of the way it was brought to the attention of the public. Hope that one day's loss will be regained Monday morning.

Noble and worthy dedication, however does not really resolve crime, poverty and the real issues facing the country.

What a waste president, did you have to call a press conference for that, I guess you wanted your face to be part of that initiative just to get the public approval!!

why the need for secrecy? Why couldn't the reserve bank simply have announced that the new bank notes would be unveiled.

Excellent! Our money already looks awesome but now they will gain a historical flavour... and who better to grace the notes than the man himself. Go Madiba --- legendary
