In the past weeks, even before the National Energy Regulator of SA announced its decision on electricity tariffs, reports surfaced that Eskom chief executive Brian Dames would resign. Eskom swiftly rejected the “rumours”, saying Dames continued to have the full support of the board.
But Gary van Staden, an analyst at NKC Economists, said because Eskom was important for the political delivery of the ANC, if individuals in the ANC started making comments that showed their dissatisfaction with Eskom’s leadership, the company should be worried.
He said this after ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe was quoted in the Sunday Independent as saying that Dames was playing mind games over rumours of his resignation.
“Eskom is a lot more important to the ANC than SAA. If Mantashe and others start making such comments, it shows that there is at least a view in the ANC that Eskom is not contributing a great deal to its delivery and the ANC is going to replace those guys. I can put my money on it,” he said. – Londiwe Buthelezi
