The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) reported that a mineworker had been killed at Impala Platinum (Implats, IMP) Shaft 20 on Tuesday morning.

The miner, a contractor working for Murray & Roberts, at the shaft was fatally injured after he was struck by a rock from the Raisebore hole.

This brings to over 92, the number of mineworkers who have died this year so far.

The NUM intends to hold a national day of mourning in October.

It said it was “disappointed by the unwillingness of the industry to guarantee safety for its employees”.

“The NUM is further highly perturbed by the Mineral Resources Department in its posturing as a defender of share prices for the JSE-listed mining companies in refusing to divulge to the public who the worst and deadly mining companies are,” the trade union said.

“In refusing to divulge such information in the interest of shares and share prices, the Department of Mineral Resources is conflicted in its role as a regulator for the mining industry and protector of safety standards,” it said. - I-Net Bridge
