MTN directors, chief may face Ugandan court

MTN chief executive Sifiso Dabengwa and eight other company directors had been summoned to appear in a court next month in Uganda on tax evasion charges, City Press reported yesterday.

According to the City Press, Interpol has been instructed by a Ugandan court to serve summonses on current and former MTN executives.

The case was opened after Naphatali Were, an axed MTN Uganda employee, blew the lid on the company’s alleged tax evasion of R310 million, while the company admitted to owing R44.1m, the newspaper reported.

Xolisa Vapi, a spokesman for MTN, said the City Press report was not a true reflection of events.

He declined to elaborate and referred to a statement in which MTN Uganda chief executive Mazen Mroure denied the allegations. MTN shares closed unchanged at R166.85 on the JSE on Friday. – Dineo Faku
