The total number of civil judgements recorded for debt in SA fell by 13.7% year on year (y/y) in October to 36‚823‚ data from Statistics SA (Stats SA) released on Thursday showed.

The total number of civil judgements recorded for debt decreased by 15.8% in three months ended October this year compared with the three months ended October last year.

The categories behind the 15.8% decrease were civil judgements relating to money lent‚ which contributed -6.3 percentage points; goods sold‚ which contributed -4.0 percentage points; services‚ with a -3.3 percentage points contribution; and ‘other’ debts‚ which contributed -3.1 percentage points.

The number of civil summonses issued for debt fell 16.6% y/y to 71‚848.

During October‚ the 36‚823 civil judgements for debt amounted to R459.1 million‚ with the largest contributors being ‘other’ debts‚ which accounted for R143.2 million‚ followed by money lent‚ with R100.9 million; services‚ with R82.5 million; and goods sold‚ with R55 million.

There was a 22.0% decrease in the total number of civil summonses issued for debt in the three months ended October this year compared with the same period last year.

The main drivers were services (contributing -10.8 percentage points); and money lent (contributing -4.3 percentage points.) - I-Net Bridge
