A municipal workers’ march turned ugly on Wednesday when protesters burnt rubbish bins in the Durban central.

The smoke from the burning bins in Durban’s Pixley ka Seme Street shocked people who thought the protesters had burnt one of the buildings.

The burning bins were quickly doused by police water canons.

The march from Curries Fountain Stadium to Durban City Hall was characterised by the thrashing of rubbish bins which left the streets littered with garbage.

Shops were closed along the route used by the strikers.

Earlier Samwu provincial secretary Jaycee Ncanana said the date of the march had been changed.

“It was supposed to take place on Friday but we have decided to change it to today. We will march from Curries Fountain stadium to the Durban City Hall.”
