Construction has commenced on the R1 billion Matlosana Mall development in Klerksdorp.

Engineering firm Murray & Roberts has been appointed the main contractor of the 65 000m2 mall by developer Abacus Asset Management, which has undertaken to use local contractors and developers wherever possible.

The company has also appointed BTKM Quantity Surveyors to manage the broad-based black economic empowerment targeting and skills development on the project.

The commencement of the project follows the approval granted by North West Local Government MEC China Dodovu.

The Matlosana Development Forum marched on the town hall last December demanding movement on the project. Forum secretary Vusi Moyakhe called the mall project “a much-needed job creator”.

Construction on the regional mall was expected to create 2 000 jobs, with a further 1 200 permanent jobs created when the mall opens. Building should be completed by October next and Abacus said major national tenants had been secured.
