Mamphela Ramphele, the chairwoman of Gold Fields, has called for dialogue between the government, mining companies and unions on ways to rebuild the mining sector. Speaking at the Investing in African Mining Indaba, she said the industry needed a 21st century business model and it was important to address issues in the sector. “The question… is how to turn the challenges we face into opportunities for creative fresh starts?” The sector employs almost a million people, half of whom are employed directly. It provided 9.2 percent of gross domestic product last year. Ramphele said if the government recognised the potential of mining, then a “smart shift in taxation can steer mining towards the clustering of productive activities”. – Dineo Faku
