South African motor trade sales rose 16.2% year-on-year in October 2012 to R42.609 billion‚ compared with the corresponding month in 2011‚ data releases by Stats SA on Thursday showed.

The highest annual growth rates were recorded for used vehicle sales (21.1%)‚ new vehicle sales (17.8%) and fuel sales (17.4%).

For the three months ended October 2012 motor tade sales rose by 9.1% compared with the three months ended October 2011. Sales for the corresponding period in 2011 increased by 16.3%‚ Stats SA noted.

The major contributors to the increase of 9.1% were fuel sales (12.0% and contributing 3.4 percentage points); new vehicle sales (10.6% and contributing 2.9 percentage points); and used vehicle sales (8.5% and contributing 1.4 percentage points)‚ Stats SA said.

Seasonally adjusted motor trade sales increased by 7.2% month-on-month in October 2012‚ following month-on-month changes of -0.5% in September 2012 and 1.0% in August 2012.

Seasonally adjusted motor trade sales increased by 1.4% for the three months ended October 2012 compared with the previous three months. - I-Net Bridge
