Most important to business was the sustainability of supply, SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) chief executive Neren Rau said yesterday. Recent strikes were an indication that challenges in the labour market were threatening strategic industries and Eskom was in a particularly strategic position. Rau added that Eskom had also had to deal with Alstom and Hitachi Africa – key suppliers to the Medupi power plant – failing to deliver on the project. On strikes in the coal sector, Rau said he had no doubt Eskom and coal suppliers had contingency plans in place. These contingency plans could last for a couple of months, by which time a high-level intervention would resolve the issues.
