Telkom has denied reports that 13 000 workers would be retrenched as part of its voluntary downsizing programme.

The fixed-line operator said on Thursday that it had not taken a decision to retrench any workers.

The speculation followed Telkom’s announcement that it would embark on a voluntary separation and early retirement process among its employees.

“No employee is obligated to invoke this offer. Importantly, this is not a section 189 process in disguise and this is not the first time Telkom has made this offer available to all categories of employees,” it said.

This week, the Communication Workers Union said it was dismayed that Telkom had never consulted the union.

It said it was convinced that even if Telkom used nice wording to confuse union members this simply meant it was retrenching. - Reuters
