Tourism arrivals between January and October last year increased by 10.4 percent year on year, the tourism ministry said yesterday. A total of 7 535 498 tourists arrived in South Africa during the period, compared with 6 823 517 in the first 10 months of 2011. There was a 12.2 percent increase in German tourist arrivals in the period. The ministry said that a number of targets had been set, which included attracting 15 million tourists a year by 2020; increasing tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product from R189.4 billion in 2009 to R499bn in 2020; and creating more than 225 000 jobs in the sector. – Sapa
