Two men who each ingested about $40 000 (R328 000) in cash before trying to enter Colombia had been arrested, police said.
The pair were detained at the international airport in Medellin and were on flights arriving from Costa Rica, according to security officials.
In the past, mules have used a similar method to smuggle contraband narcotics out of the country, swallowing packets of drugs worth thousands for sale in lucrative overseas markets.
“This type of money laundering activity is new in Colombia,” said immigration director Wilson Patino. Officials did not say how the cash was recovered, but said one man drew attention when he appeared to be nervous and agitated. – Sapa-AP
