‘Wage subsidy will not help’

The proposed youth wage subsidy will not create employment for young people, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) said on Thursday.

“We have rejected it, it will not solve the problem,” secretary general Irvin Jim said on the sidelines of the ANC's national policy conference in Midrand, Johannesburg.

“It will rotate young people and it will never equip them with the necessary skills.”

He said the union wanted young people to be employed to a level were they would be properly paid.

“This wage subsidy will not stop poverty, unemployment and inequality.”

Jim said Numsa had made its case at the policy conference and it was up to delegates to decide.

“We have made our case. We cannot predict the outcome.”

Numsa proposed that all key economical sectors be nationalised.

“We want our product to benefit the country and it should be manufactured within the country.”

Jim described the debate in commissions as “healthy, robust and promising”. - Sapa
